Welcome to Android Central! Which device? Which messaging app are you using, the stock Messaging one?

First, go to Settings>Sounds>Notifications, and make sure they're on, and that you have an audible tone set. Then open Messaging, tap Menu>Settings, and look for the Notification settings there, because you can choose different notification tones for certain apps.

I have a galaxy S3 - use default Messaging (hate Hangouts).

In my case, I was still getting the little icon in the top left of my homescreen for texts, but my sound for texts wasn't working at all. I too had changed no settings. Dinking around with the settings as per the above instructions did NOT fix it.

I finally shut the phone ALL the way off and turned it back on a few minutes later.
    Problem solved.

    So...yeah...no idea what was up.
