Can the 160 max text character be unlocked on my LG-D160 (or L40) android phone

Is there a setting be revised to allow 480 characters to be automatically be split into 3 three sms messages (rather than defaulting to mms after 160).
I am new to android phones & have lots to learn, so a simplified answer would be preferred. If I do need to download an app, which would best sort this issue?
Many thanks for your assistance.

That would be like "unlocking" the 32 ounce limit on a quart container. SMS is a 140 octet (which translates to 160 Latin characters) protocol. It's inherent in the thing.

Some text apps allow you to choose between multiple text messages or one MMS message (which is really just a text file), others don't. GoSMS Pro (there's a free version) allows you to turn off message splitting, sending the messages as MMS. If you don't turn it off, it sends them as multiple text messages. The default is splitting.
