Why are some SMS messages marked as unsent even though the recipients received them?

Why are some messages unsent after I reboot?

Model Number: DROID MAXX
Provider: Verizon
Android Version: 4.4.4
System Version: 21.11.21.obake-maxx_verizon.Verizon.en.US

Action: I shut the phone off completely, wait a few moments, then turn the phone back on.

Problem: My phone SMS program notifies me that some messages were not able to be sent, even though my recipients did indeed receive them, and no such error message was given at the time the messages were sent and received.

This only occurs when I turn off the phone and turn it on again. Some messages will be quite old that are "unsent".

How do I resolve this?

Perhaps try Settings, Apps, All, scroll to the Messaging app (or whatever app you are using for SMS) and select Clear Cache and Clear Data.
A Cache Partition wipe in Recovery may also be useful.
