Why am I unable to swipe my screen open, when everything else seems to be working?

Everything else, as in touching the screen doing anything? If the touchscreen isn't working, the swipe won't work, nor will anything else that requires a touch on the screen. If you can get to the homescreen and open apps by touching the screen, then your lock screen is probably corrupt. Set it on "None" for the moment, then look for a different lockscreen app.
