Is it harmful to charge a smartphone while it is on?

Think about it. While it is turned on, the CPU, the RAM and other sensitive areas of the phone are still actively working. Now when a charger is plugged in, a source of unclean power is added. We all know no charger is perfect, and no charger can deliver perfectly clean 5V DC free from AC interference, fluctuations, harmonics and AC noises.

While the CPU, RAM etc. are working through the battery power, it's getting an almost perfect power source (except the fluctuations due to discharging).

So does turning off the phone while charging increase the longevity of the phone?

Welcome to Android Central! I don't think power from an AC charger is harmful while you're using the phone. All devices should be able to regulate how much current is being drawn. The main caution would be against running any highly CPU-intensive apps while charging, because those apps will likely cause some heat, and that can combine with the heat that can occur while charging to potentially lead to dangerous temps (although this is rare). I would also be careful about plugging any device into an outlet that doesn't have some kind of surge protection.

Its not harmful once it's fully charged take it off.
