Heat normally means a short or something drawing more current than it should. Where the problem lies is what has to be diagnosed. "Getting hot" is a symptom, not a cause.

As belodion said, if you put a new battery in the phone and the problem goes away, the old battery was bad. If not, something in the phone is causing the problem.
