I have a 4-digit password ot unlock my phone. It is a pain to keep doing this as the phone times out and the screen goes black after only a few seconds. How do I get rid of this

Settings-security or settings-lockscreen, depending on the phone and OS version.

You may not want to live with an always unlocked phone, in case of loss or theft. You can adjust how long it waits before re-locking with the passcode (same setting as above) as well as how long it waits before the screen goes dark (in settings-display), which should reduce the inconvenience of frequent locking.

Or you can get an app like Tasker and have it change things depending on where you are. If I'm at home, I have no lockscreen. the screen times out after 10 seconds - to save battery - but when I press the power button I'm back at the homescreen. (Also USB debugging is off, mobile data is off, etc.) When I leave home, the screen is locked, USB debugging is off, etc.

It's $3 and a little learning that's well worth it.
