when I try to view some of my most recent pictures and some random later ones in my Gallery in "my camera" each picture is black with a smaller grey box with an outline bust image in white. (Looks like a pawn in chess) and a small lightening bolt in the top right hand corner. The task bar down left hand side shows "Camera" box (again black with smaller grey box and chess piece) with over 300 pictures it also shows the image of a camera and the memory card.

How do I get the pictures to preview or have I lost them

Welcome to Android Central! Which device do you have? Are the photo saved to Internal Storage or an external SD card?

Use a file manager app like ES File Explorer (if the device didn't come with one installed), and look at your /DCIM/Camera folder--do you see the photos there? If so, then go to Settings>Apps>All, select Gallery, and Force Stop, then Clear Cache/Clear Data. When you open it again, wait a few seconds for the database to repopulate, and see if the photos show correctly now.
