Why can't I get my photos in my Gallery on my S5?

Help with my S5 pictures

I have problems retrieving photos in My Gallery. It comes up with a black box with a grey smaller box inside. Inside this is what looks like a pawn piece in chess ( obviously to represent a person). It also has a small lightning flash on top right hand side of small box. When I go into My Camera the icon there is also black. It has a icon of a camera and sd card. However it appears to happen totally randomly. Most of my older photos are still there it appears to affect mostly more recent photos but even that is random. Is there anyway I can recover these photos? Thanks

Are you using an SD card? If so, perhaps it is not mounted correctly, or is faulty.

Sounds like corrupt picture files. It could be the camera hardware, it could be the camera app, it could be the camera firmware, it could, as belodion said, be a bad SD card if the bad ones are on the SD card.
