I have Verizon and I used to be rooted but ever since an update s month or so ago I have lost the ability to use my rooted apps. Now there's another update but it always gets an error when I try to install it.

Welcome to the forums. To clarify, you were rooted, then you unrooted, accepted and update, but now you can't get a second update?

There are still traces of rooting in the phone, so it won't update. One of the first things the update process does is to check that the system and OS haven't been changed. Yours has. You'll have to reflash stock firmware to update. (The XDA S5 forum should have plenty of information.)

As far as not being able to run apps that need root, when you update, you replace the system. You rooted the old system. The updated system isn't rooted. (Even though there are still some traces of rooting left. When an app tries to run under su - which is what rooting is all about - there's no su in the phone. The updated system didn't come with one.)

(Rooting 4.4.2 is still possible. Rooting 4.4.4 is problematical at this time. If rooting is important, stay at 4.4.2.)
