Fully charge it when it's new. Use it until the tab tells you to recharge it. Do that cycle 3 times. Then recharge it at about 40%-60% discharged. NEVER let a lithium battery die - if you do (most phones will shut off before that) the safety circuit in the battery will disconnect the battery from the terminals, and all you'll have is hazardous waste, not a battery. (Charging a fully discharged lithium battery can result in a fire or explosion. Lithium is poisonous, so you don't want molten lithium burning into your skin.)

We all want to get the most we can out of each charge, but fully discharging the battery every time gives you about 300 charges. At 18 hours per charge, that gives you about 7-1/2 months until the battery is shot. If you need more time than 60% gives you, buy an external battery (Zerolemon makes some nice ones).

Or keep trying for maximum time between charges and make the battery makers rich.

(^^^So, regarding fire/explosion, advising users to leave dead battery charging for 24h to try to restore to life is very bad advice?)

As said, not good to let batteries go down to 0. You can acclimate your battery from time to time by letting the battery go down to 20%. Turn off the phone. Charge the phone with the phone off up to 100%. Turn on phone. Phone may immediately go down to 98-99%. Power off, charge back to 100%. Phones charge faster powered off.
