I can select text with the two movable pincers but no matter how I try I can't find how to copy the text and paste it.

There doesn't seem to be any means to do so on my Nexus 4 in Chrome.

Is your chrome is up to date?
When you press, hold and get those two little cursors, there are little icons at the top. One of them looks like one piece of paper on top of another. That's copy. When you are ready to paste, press and hold the spot where you want it and either PASTE will appear or you'll see a little clipboard at the top.
