I put my phone on charge when it was on 5% and it was charging for a good hour! i checked up on it and it was down to 3% - i checked my phone to make sure i didn't have any apps etc running in the background - which may have been draining it - it turned out there wasn't and it completely died on me after just a couple of minutes! After leaving it on charge and also plugging it into my laptop it is refusing to charge again. i have tried taking out the battery but i am unsure on what else i can do!

If you "charge" a phone at a slower rate than it's using power, all you're doing is slowing down the discharge rate. Turn the phone off and it should be fully charged in a couple of hours. (Be sure you're using the stock charger and cable - a charger that's not putting out enough current, or a cable that drops too much voltage, could cause the same symptom.)
