I am using the message+ app on the Samsung Galaxy S5. I just recently decided to have different notifications for some of my friends when they send me text messages. I went into the message+ app, went to the person, went to tones and changed the notification. Now when the person texts me I get two different sound notifications. The default one, the Verizon alert and the custom one which is the whistle sound. How do I stop the default one from sounding ? I really don't want to install a different messaging app.

The second tone seems to have gone away after I powered the phone off and on again.

Do you still have the default messaging app running? If so, turn off notifications in that one. If you have 2 apps doing the same thing, and they both have notifications turned on, you'll get 2 notifications - text, email, any app that gets incoming data on its own.
