Why does my Moto G (4G LTE) prioritize mobile over wifi when wifi is available?

My Moto G (1st Gen 4G LTE version, Android version 4.4.4) from AT&T prioritizes mobile data connection even when wifi is available. I will attempt to connect to the wifi connection in setttings, and once I hit "connect" it will attempt to connect, then "connect," but then immediately say "disabled" and stay connected with 4G. I have to turn off mobile connection, in which it will then connect via wifi and then I can re-enable mobile (while still connected via wifi). While this works, I like to avoid using data when its not necessary, and its annoying to have to remember to do this every time I use my phone for anything other than phone calls. Any tips/info would be greatly appreciated.

Strange. On this thread it was clarified that WiFi takes precedence over Data services when available. Is the phone actually connecting to the WiFi signal?

If not, I'd try running all applicable updates, checking for OS/Carrier updates, or a restart/refresh to try to remedy.
