Welcome to Android Central! Which device do you have? Official updates are up to the manufacturer, and lesser-known brands or older devices are much less likely to get system updates. If there is an official update available, you should be able to see it in Settings>About Tablet>System Updates. If there are none, then check the manufacturer's website to look for support for the tablet, and see if there is anything there about an update.

Your alternative is to root the device and look for a custom ROM designed specifically for your device. You can find that information using a Google search.

Just go to Settings -> About -> Software update, update to the latest version.
    Good luck to you.
