Which apps to use on a brand new phone?

My previous post was wether to buy a Nexus 6 or a 2nd gen Moto X. I went with the latter and I'm very satisfied.

As I haven't used Android in a while, which apps am I supposed to use?
Inbox or Gmail
Photos or Gallery
Currents or Newsstand
Also there are two Calendars, one with the old green calendar icon, the other one with the blue flip-calendar icon.

I assume Inbox vs Gmail is an individual preference but what about the rest?
A colleague told me about the Lollipop messaging app. Am I supposed to use it rather than Hangouts with SMS/MMS?

I assume it's stupid to ask all these questions but I'm actually a bit confused with all the various choises.

For email and messaging, you're right, it's just your own preference for whichever app works best for you. Personally I use Hangouts for messaging and Inbox for email.

The Lollipop update supposedly removes Gallery altogether leaving you with only Photos (which is tied to your G+ account), and when you open Currents now it should give you a message that it's been rolled into Newsstand and deactivate itself.
