I am wanting an ipod touch equivalent android for my elementary-age kids. I am looking at a Boost Mobile Moto G or Virgin Mobile HTC Desire. Not wanting to spend $100 or more for an unlocked version. Is it possible to bypass activation for either of these phones and use only as a wifi device for games/apps?

Welcome to the forums. I am not entirely sure this can be skipped, but I may be wrong.

I'm pretty sure you can. If I recall, the Verizon Moto G 2013 went on sale through several retailers for about $70, and I think people were successfully using as WiFi devices.

You may have to put in some information - Google account (Android is tied to Google pretty tightly, and some carriers make the setup app the first thing that runs when you turn a new phone on - you can probably just close it, the question isn't whether it'll do any harm [it won't], but whether that particular carrier's app can be dismissed without filling in at least some of the information), name, etc. But you don't have to activate the phone. I have a few phones that were either never activated or haven't been active in years, and they still run apps and connect to the internet. (I recently turned on an old Nextel phone that the customer never picked up - about 10 years ago. Put in a working battery and it does everything but make phone calls, since there's no more Nextel to connect to.)

But wouldn't a not so top-of-the-line, but known brand, wifi-only tablet do the job much better?

Yes you can bypass activation on the Moto g, at least the Verizon version. Pretty easy.

I use an international Moto G as a tablet off my Note 3 hotspot while I consider buying more data for it. Rather I drop it in the street than the Note 3, and I have done 3 times!
