changed google password now can't access google on android devices

I recently updated my google password and have no issues on my laptop but it has rendered my samsung mobile devices useless.
I can't access anything and I keep getting the message to verify my account details. I have put in the new password along with the verification code but I keep getting the error message " unfortunately google play service has stopped". I can't get pasts this. I have cleaned out the cache for all google apps and rebooted

Short version. Delete the Google account (not the GMail email account). Create a new account, connecting to the existing Google account, using the new password.
