You'll need an email app that can decode emoticons. An emoticon is just text that the app interprets as a picture it has stored internally, like : ) (without the space) shows as
here. (It's not a perfect analogy, in case some of the purists out there want to flame me. Here it's done at the server, in email it's done in the client, but it's the same idea -
something has to translate the characters into a picture.)
