How do I do a factory reset?

How to factory reset my phone that won't turn on.

I have the Galaxy s3 and it recently shut off on me and every time I put the battery in it powers up to Samsung screen and loses power, it loses power while trying to get into recovery mode too. Is there a way to factory reset it when it can only have power for 4-5 seconds.

Welcome to Android Central! It sounds more like a battery issue--that battery might be failing. Can you try a new or different battery?

You have a bad power switch /button (not the plastic part)
Have the power switch replaced by a local shop.... Problem solved.
