Why can't I connect to an open wifi connection?

I am currently on vacation and the wifi I am supposed to use is an open network with a login required in the browser. I connect to the wifi fine, but the browser page doesn't open for me to login and have access to the Internet.

Open a browser. Go to some site (any site - I usually use aol.com if I'm not going to be using the browser, because it's fast to type). You'll get a login page first. (It's how some public wifi software is written.)
