Opening the Kindle app immediately dims the screen ... so much so it is almost black on gray.
I have switched the Auto Brightness off, set the screen to its highest level and the app still dims.
All the other apps are fine, a nice crisp back light.
    Uninstalled Kindle app / reinstalled
    Screen Timeout - 10 minutes
    Daydream - off
    Extreme power saving - off
    Sleep mode - off
    Thoughts?

Have you tried adjusting the brightness in the Kindle App itself?
Tap on the "Aa" button in the action bar (drops the menu where you can set font size, color, etc.) There is a slider where you can adjust the brightness or set to use the system brightness.
