I viewed my work gmails on my phone once - all the contacts have been auto-synced and I don't want any of them on my phone. I've tried deleting some but it says they will be removed from all places stored - I obviously need to keep them on the work gmail account!

My android is a Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini

Welcome to Android Central! How about choosing which contacts to display? Open Contacts, tap Menu, tap Contacts to Display, then Customize.

Otherwise, go to Settings>Accounts-Google>[your Google account], and uncheck Contacts. This will stop the sync, but will still leave the contacts on your phone. If you delete the contacts on the phone, they won't delete in your Google cloud. However, be cautious if you ever re-sync the contacts again, because that might then sync all of the deletions, and delete them from the cloud.
