Is there a way to stop notifications from certain group texts? (MotoX 2nd Generation)

I'm just trying to turn off notifications to certain group messages that I'm in. Otherwise, when people in these texts are texting back and forth and I'm in a meeting, my phone will keep vibrating. I know the new iOS allows you to do this but I was wondering if there was a way on android phones.

I'm not sure what app you are using for SMS but I know some third party apps would allow you to do this. For example I use Handcent for SMS. If I have someone or a group as a contact I can personalize the notification from them and by doing so it should be possible to set the alert to silent and turn off the vibration.
