Welcome to Android Central! You can't, unfortunately. All apps need to be downloaded and installed directly to Internal Storage. If the phone allows for apps to be moved to the SD card, then it can be done after the initial installation process. But keep in mind that moving an app to SD only moves a portion (and often a small portion at that), while a large part of the app needs to remain in Internal Storage.

Is the same true of photos? Can they be stored automatically on the SD card instead of internal storage? What's the point of having an SD card if we can't use it?

It depends on the device's camera settings. Most devices that have a microSD card slot will allow you to change the Camera's default save location, but there may be some that don't (probably because their firmware is poorly designed--the higher end phones don't have this problem). You need to open the Camera app, go to its settings, and look for the Default Save Location setting.

Also keep in mind that the SD card has always been most useful for storing media, like music, photos, and videos--not for app installation.
