How can I retrieve texts from .sme backup?

After hours of searching Google I feel like I'm the only person to ever consistently backup their Galaxy, then end up breaking it, then buy a different (none-android) phone but still want the old texts from my Galaxy backup. I can't find ANYTHING that will help me open that damn .sme file.

Am I missing something? Kies won't open it (I'm guessing without a Galaxy connected) and neither will anything else I've downloaded.

Does anyone know how to retrieve the texts from a Kies backup or am I completely out of luck?

I am also in the same position.
I searched using google, and it seems there is a reader for SME files but my guess is those SME files are not the ones samsung uses for their SMS backup.

Why do people recommend Samsung Kies when it is such a steaming pile of ****?

It fails to restore SMS messages, and they're now trapped in an SME file and every tool I find that advertises the ability to read SME files turns out to include malware.

It fails to backup icon choices/positions on your home screens.

Really shocked that people advise Kies as an optimal backup solution.
