Perhaps the SIM tray is damaged?

But in another sense of 'take', perhaps the phone is locked?

Welcome to Android Central! To be clear--you're trying to replace the SIM card with one from your carrier, so that you can use it to make calls on your carrier plan? Or are you talking about the microSD card, for additional storage?
