The Data Usage Apps shows minimal total data usage but the phone has recorded 1.8Gb data usage. He tells me he hasn't changed anything at all and was just using as normal...his monthly usage is usually under 1Gb. What could be going on ? Its a Galaxy S2?

its either the data monitor didnt track usage of some apps or your Services Provider is dual billing you. mine used to deduct 2GB for every 1GB i used so i switched to another. I think you should read this post on How to solve the problem of heavy data consumption in iPhone, iPad and Android Smartphones / Tablets as it oulines more possible causes of data usage spikes

But the overall data usage on the Android app matched that of the data provider, but the individual apps showed tiny usage, not even close in total to the overall usage showing?

did you check Wi-Fi? I'm certain that the data monitor shows total usage and each apps usage. unless you got the date range all mixed up

Do you have your apps set to auto-update? If a lot of them updated overnight, that's a lot of data, and Play Store may not register it as data usage. (An Android update can do that also, but it wouldn't be 1.8GB.)

No auto-updates set. (The apps have not been updated for a while (no storage left!)). Wifi was off this particular night. Other nights when it has been on this amount of data was not used either (checking our wifi logs). This was something really unusual, and we need to understand what happened before we can turn the data on again.

I remember an instance about three months ago when I'd been using Chrome, if I recall right, then switched off after I'd finished. Fairly brief, normal use, nothing unusual. Two or three hours later I noticed data consumption of about (again, if I recall right) 1.3GB, attributable to Chrome. There was no explanation that was obvious to me, especially in such a short time. Fortunately I was on an unlimited data tariff, but even so, these things are an unpleasant surprise when they happen, made worse by the difficulty of understanding why they happen.
