Does alternative password time out and return to the fingerprint scanner?

My S5's fingerprint scanner wouldn't recognize my fingerprint, it then went into alternative password and won't recognize my password. Does this time out so I can try the fingerprint again? I don't want to do a hard reset if I can avoid it.
