Why is there a slot for an SD card on my phone if I can't even use it?

I have very little space on my phone's internal storage, but I have an eight gig SD card plugged in. I've done some research and it says that apps won't download onto my SD without me downloading some link 2SD app and setting up a double partition on it. Help me.

Hello. You would normally download an app to the device, then go to settings - apps / Applications Manager and select Move to SD Card on the App Info.
Is that what you tried to do.
Not all apps will be enabled to move, particularly stock device apps. It will free up some space, but part of the app remains internally.
If you have limited device storage, a small part of that is allocated for apps, possibly 1gb, the rest for media.
