Why is my Galaxy S5 battery draining so quickly?

I just got a Samsung Galaxy s5 today and charged it once bc the batter was half full. Is it better for the battery life to let it die each time and then fully charge it?

Definitely not. I believe that three or four full charges and discharges are recommended for a new battery, but thereafter, charge to 100% and try not to let the battery become discharged lower than 40-50% before recharging. Inconvenient for some users, I know, but that will give you the best chance of a long healthy battery life.
