My fingerprint scanner rarely recognizes my fingerprint on the Samsung S5, is there a trick to doing it?

my fingerprint scanner rarely recognizes my fingerprint on the Samsung s5

I register my fingerprints OK but when I try to unlock my screen it never recognizes my fingerprint. I have to use my PIN. Is there a trick to swiping your finger when unlocking that's different from registering a fingerprint?

This is not atypical. The fp scanner on the S5 is quite quirky. I think if you swipe carefully and the moon is aligned properly and it's the right time of day it works better. I just gave up on it and used a pattern.
