Why can't I get my A500 to start in recovery mode?

Can't get my A500 to start in recovery mode.

I have an Acer A500 and I'm trying to do a cache patrician wipe on it, but when I follow the instructions for starting it in recovery mode (hold down volume-down and hit power, continue holding volume-down) it starts normally. I'm definitely holding down the right key and holding it quite firmly until get all the way through its boot-up process and to its main screen. I've tried three times and it boots up normal each time.
About Tablet says that it is build number Acer_A500_7.014.02_CIN_GEN2, Kernel version 2.6.36.3+, running Android OS 3.2.1 (which hasn't updated in a while and is refusing to check for updates, thus the need for a cache wipe).

Re: Can't get my A500 to start in recovery mode.

I have the same problem with my Nexus 5. Long-press Volume Down and Power simultaneously is supposed to do it, but it will often just reboot. Eventually, it'll work. Could be me not doing it quite right, I don't know. Persist!
