Why don't my saved contacts open on my S3?

[AC Question]

i try to open a file(contact file.contact) but the message that pops up is

ihad saved my contacts on my windows7 ultimate laptop i then transferred to my samsung s111 mini but does not open or show the number of my contacts?

Welcome to Android Central! How did you save that file to your computer in the first place? Did you just use a file explorer and find that file, or did you use a contact backup app?

If you just used a file explorer to copy the file, that's not the proper way to backup or restore contacts. You'd need to use an actual contact backup app, or better yet, get all of your contacts into your Google account. Since they get synced automatically to your Google cloud, they can easily be synced to any new device that you log into.
