My Samsung Galaxy s4 got an update which was 5.0.1 so I updated the phone but after the update it was still on 4.4.2, I don't know if the root caused something, so what should I do to fix it?

Root should cause an update to fail. (Even unrooting won't let it update in most cases.) Things that can be done while rooted can cause an update to brick the phone.

Reflash the stock 4.4.2 (SamMobile Firmwares - put the model number [not S4] into the search box, hit the magnifying glass, find the appropriate listing for your phone, click or tap it and you'll get page with a download button and installation instructions.) Then either wait until the phone updates (a few days usually) or go to About device and the first item is to update the ROM.
