How do I stop my mail client from draining my battery?

trouble with mail client draining battery

On 3/1/2015 I noticed the native Gmail app spinning its wheels trying to update my Yahoo mail. Since then my battery consumption has gone way up and the app at the top of the culprit list is Gmail. I suspect there is some issue connecting with Yahoo and updating my Yahoo mail. Anyone else seeing this?

Not exactly that, but I did get ongoing battery drain throughout the day from Gmail a couple of days ago, after doing no more than sending two emails. No idea why.
