Woke up this morning to find out that my phone, left in another room, with the screen off, had dialed someone else twice during the night. What could make this happen? Can spam callers hack into the phone in some way? I have been getting 1866 number callers frequently for the last few days.

Welcome to Android Central! It's possible, as described in this relatively infamous post from AVG: Malware Is Still Spying On You After Your Mobile Is Off. But malware like this requires a lot of unusual things to happen--you have to be rooted and installing shady apps from a shady Chinese website.

Is the phone also sending texts on its own? If you're concerned, install a good security app like Malwarebytes or Lookout and do a scan. If nothing comes up and the behavior continues, you may want to do a factory reset, and be careful about which apps you reinstall.
