It means NFC is enabled. You can disable NFC in settings.

It stands for Near Field Communications. Like if you put the phone next to another phone with NFC, and you're both running an app that uses NFC to transfer data - you can give each other Contacts information. Or if you have a bill-paying app that used NFC, and the store has a credit card reader that has NFC, you can just hold your phone over the spot indicated on the reader to pay.

It can also read NFC tags, so you can program one for "front door" and if you pass the phone over that as you're leaving the house, and have an app like Tasker, the phone can realize that you're leaving the house, and turn off wifi, turn on mobile data, etc.

If you're not using it, you can disable it. (I've had mine disabled for over a year, since I never use it, so I don't have to look at the icon either.)
