Why did a star icon appear on a picture in the gallery?

One of the pictures in the photo gallery suddenly has a small white square with a star in the middle. I didn't edit the picture or do anything to it. The icon doesn't show up when I send the picture only in the photo gallery

Welcome to Android Central! Is it only on the thumbnail, or is it also on the full-sized picture? Which phone do you have, and are you using the stock Gallery app?

Galaxy s5 standard gallery app. Star appears on thumbnail and full size picture but doesn't show up if I send it to someone. Only in the Gallery

Could it be that the photo was tagged as a Favorite somehow?

how you do that? And how do you undo it?

I actually don't even know if that's a thing. While searching your issue, I came across a help page for the Galaxy Camera (the point-and shoot camera from Samsung with the touchscreen Android interface) that showed the ability to sort your gallery by Favorites--but I'm not sure if the S5 Gallery app has the same option: https://forums.androidcentral.com/e....samsung.com%2Fus%2Fsupport%2F&token=aC7RdL0U. Sorry, I wish I had an S5 to play around with, but at this point, I'm just trying to make some educated guesses.:-\
