Assuming that the phone is SIM-locked. Put another carrier's SIM in it first. If it doesn't ask for an unlock code, it's not locked, so you don't have to unlock it.

To get the unlock code from Verizon, the phone has to be on an active Verizon account and it has to be fully paid for. Call Verizon, go into a Verizon store or look on the Verizon Mobile website. They have to give you the unlock code by law. (It usually takes a few days to a week - they have to get it from the manufacturer.)

If you've already cancelled your Verizon account, you'll have to go to eBay and pay someone for an unlock code.

As far as Straight Talk, they're a virtual network operator, not a carrier. They use AT&T, Sprint, TMobile and Verizon as carriers. So find out which carrier covers where you need coverage (if you ask someone who they use and they tell you Straight Talk, TracFone, Net10, Virgin or anyone other than the 4 carriers I named, they're giving you the network operator (the company they pay), not the carrier (the towers they use). When you find out which carrier gives you the best coverage, use that carrier with Straight Talk.
