Why can't I factory reset or update my htc one x+?

When i try to factory reset my htc one x plus, it shuts down, then a white screen apears that says fastboot. same thing does if i try to update the software. what can i do?

Did you unlock the bootloader or root the device previously. Typically Fastboot is when you do the 3 finger salute (getting into fastboot) so you can do the extra things to root, unlock etc. Its possible something is corrupted and you would need to flash the factor ROM back to it.
