I recently noticed a small gray HD symbol or logo near one of my calls in my call log instead of the tropical red call symbol. Now it has happened 3x with only one contact but not every call with that person. What is it

Means that the call was placed using HD Voice (in theory, improved sound). Not all calls can be placed that way, though, and the process is automatic (the user cannot choose HD or not, it just works or it doesn't).

For an HD call to be placed/received, both devices must support HD calling, the Carrier needs to support HD calling, and you have to be in an area with HD calling available. Depending on 'traffic' or 'cell load', you might also lose HD calling if the network is too saturated.
