how do I fix an authentication error when I'm trying to connect to a open wifi?

I'm trying to connect to a free WiFi network and when I try to connect it says authentication error. How could I fix this?

There should be another option at the bottom that says advanced or something like that. Once you click that it should give you a warning and and option to preceed

Or you may have connected to a password protected router with the same name in the past, so the phone is trying to authenticate to a router that isn't accepting (or asking for) authentication. Forget the connection, then try creating it again.
