I know there are cases you can buy that will allow you o take the SG5 underwater to take pictures. Do I need to get one or is the phone itself waterproof?

Welcome to Android Central! It's rated at IP67, which means that in testing, it was protected in a 30 minute immersion test at a depth of 1 meter. So it will probably be fine, but be aware that there actually is no guarantee that the water resistance won't fail at some point. There are always a few posts here about someone who tested out their phone's water resistance, only to find that it wasn't working well afterwards.
