Fire TV stick, asus memo pad 7 and mircast

[AC Question]

I have just received the fire tv stick and trying to mirror my memopad 7 (me173x) to the tv. I select the enable miracast in the settings in the stick, then connect to the stick on the pad with the cast screen. TV says connecting to device and then the screen goes black and does not display any options. The stick is running android 4.2 which Amazon says is the minimum requirement.
I have also tried to miracast from my dads nexus 7 and that won't even see the stick, and that's running on android 5.2.
Any ideas?
