I recently switched from iphone to Samsung Galaxy S5. With my iphone, I was able to selectively turn off apps from operating in the background to save the battery, is it possible to do it with the new phone? And how?

    Welcome to Android Central.

Try Settings, Mobile Data, then under the data usage stats, open the apps in turn....you should find the option to turn off background data.

Apps such as Greenify and similar are also useful.
