text message notifications still on when no text message is to be read

I have an lg optimus and I have received messages they come in sections from friends, but only one section comes in and the other never appears so it shows that I have received a text message in my home screen when I do not have a message to read. does anyone have any solutions on how to get rid ofthe icon showing I have a notification when I obviously do not
