Is there a way to send auto reply texts while on airplane mode?

I'm going on a trip to Iceland in a few days and am taking my cellphone with me. I will either be removing the sim card or putting it on airplane mode the whole time I am there and just using it to send e-mails and take some pictures. I want to set up my phone so my friends will receive an auto response from me saying where I am, when I'll be back and that if it's important they can e-mail me.
I know that there are apps I can download to send auto response messages, but do any of them work if the phone is on airplane mode, or if the sim card isn't in the phone?
I have a samsung galaxy s4 with the newest lollipop update.

Welcome to Android Central! Check with your carrier if they have an auto-reply message you can set up. Verizon has something like that, but I think you have to use their Messages+ app.
