I don't like it that other people can read a message I have received right from my locked screen. I mean isn't that one of the purposes of having a locked screen, so people can't access what's on your phone?

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? Go to Settings>Sounds & Notifications>When Device Is Locked, and change it to Hide Sensitive Content. Now go to Settings>Sounds & Notifications>App Notifications, and select any app whose notifications you want to hide on the lockscreen, and turn on the Sensitive switch. (This is how it's done on the Nexus 5--the menus on your device might differ slightly.)
